Kenya braves pressure, loses 1-0 to Pharaoh’s
Kenya last night braved mounting pressure and criticism and lost to a solitary goal by the mighty Pharaoh’s
The goal was scored by Al-Ahly’s Ahmed Hassan in the 25th Minute, after a defensive error by the Kenyans.
It was a star-studded Egyptian team which included Wael Gomaa, Hamed Hassan, Ahmed Fathy, Al Fayed and emerging star Abdel Razik. Hamed Hassan has been long-serving captain of the Egytian Team and was on duty in both Africa Nations Cups where Egypt won.
The match was one of the high-profile friendlies Egypt has organized in preparation for their WorldCup bid. In November 19th, they played against Benin with the same team, and they won 5-1.
According to the BBC website, Bolton scouts were in attendance to watch the match specifically and it is rumored that some Kenyans may have caught their eye. More will be known in the coming days.
Jockin’s Atudo was perhaps the man of the match, after a superb display of stability and control in the Kenyan defence. Zablon Amanaka also held off all aerial assaults, preventing Kenya from conceding more goals.
The mid-field held on well, and other than a few sloppy mistakes, showed that with more time together in camp, they can perform even better
The boys made a good account of themselves, considering that Kenya lost by the same margin to minnows Uganda in the recently concluded CECAFA Cup Championships. The game was flawless and the passes were brilliant.
Critics had speculated a dismal performance moreso after Premier League side Mathare United FC refused to release their players for "unknown" reasons. It may be a signal of a new National Team where players are genuinely selected based on merit, and the emergence of Kenya as a Football power-house.
The team was also ruled out after Star Striker Dennis Oliech who is currently struggling in AJ Auxxere who extended their winless streak to 7 games, stated that he would only play in a National Team with Francis Kimanzi. Oliech could be staring at another relegation meaning that his agent will be shopping for another club in the next transfer window.
