US League Updates: Ombiji on a goal spree

USL 1 Lawrence Olum’s Portland Timbers earned a point to move up to third in the 11 team USL 1 after the leading duo of Vancouver Whitecaps and Charleston Battery both lost their games at the weekend. Portland 2 - 2 Atlanta Kenyan midfielder Olum yet again sat out the game still tending a Quad strain. The game was played at Portland’s PGE Stadium in front of a crowd of 7,862. Chris Bagley gave the Timbers the early lead after in the 14th minute but soon after lost midfielder Tom Poltl to a red card in the 17th minute. Atlanta made their one man advantage count earning 29th minute coming through a Miguel Guante own goal. Timbers were back in front in the 39th minute through Justin Thompson going into the half. Timbers failed to hang on to the lead when Scot Thompson earned a red in the 68th minute. Atalanta grabbed the equalizer with two minutes to deny Portland a home win for the fifth time in a row. Montreal Impact 1 - 0 Charleston David Kenga’s Charleston Battery lost by a solitary goal away to Montreal Impact. The lone goal of the game was scored by Sita-Taty Matondo late in the 83rd minute. Kenga did not feature in the game. After the weekend games, Charleston remains on 20 points after 11 games and still trails s Whitecaps by two points. The Whitecaps, table toppers lost 3-0 away at Rochester Rhinos. Portland is now third with 18 points in 14 games.
USL 2 Since the last game against Richmond Kickers on June 7th, Harrisburg City Islanders has gone on to win another three games – two in the league and on in the US Cup. Crystal Palace B. 0 - 1 Harrisburg City Islanders In the game on the 8th June, Kenyan forward Brian Ombiji (Pictured in a past game) followed up on his brace the day before to score the only goal in the game as Harrisburg City Islanders beat hosts Crystal Palace B 1-0. Ombiji’s goal came after a fine pass from midfielder Yu Hoshide in the 67th minute. Harrisburg City Islanders 4-0 Real Maryland In another league game played yesterday against visitors Real Maryland, skipper Mo Oduor scored a first half penalty and Ombiji added a fourth soon after the restart to complete the rout. Ombiji now has four goals in three league games while Mo Oduor is has three goals in total. The win yesterday marked a fourth consecutive league win for Harrisburg, a fifth overall including the 5-1 midweek whitewash of Yakima Reds in a US Open.
