Two in two for Olum’s Timbers
By Patrick Korir
Portland Timbers 2:1 Minnesota Lawrence Olum’s Portland Timbers made it two wins in two USL1 league games in the new 2008 season after seeing off visiting Minnesota in a game played today. Timbers forward Chris Brown, the scorer of the only goal in the first league game against Puerto Rico last week gave Portland an early in the first half. Midfielder Shaun Higgins scored the decider in the 65th minute after a lay-in from Captain Andrew Gregor. Kenya’s midfielder Lawrence Olum started his second game in a row for the Timbers, but once again had to make way in the second half. Many fans watching the game felt that Olum “The Cat”, playing wide on the right did not fit in to his role hence being subbed in the 63rd minute by Miguel Guante. Olum is at risk of loosing his starting position on Sunday when the Timbers take on arch rivals Seattle Sounders at their PGE Park in the third league game. On the same Sunday, David Kenga’s Charleston Battery will be away to Carolina for their third league game. Charleston is yet to win a game after earning two draws against Miami FC and Seattle Sounders. Eldoret connection of Brian Ombiji and Moffat Mo Oduor will kick off their league season for Harrisburg City Islanders in the USL2 (third tier) with a home game against visiting Cleveland CS on Sunday. The USL2 league kicked off last weekend. In the meantime, Isaac Saidi’s New England Revolution picked its third win of the season today after a hard fought 1-0 away win at FC Dallas after its sixth league game. The win enables NE Revolution climb the seven team Western Conference table to second with seven points, same as leaders Kansas City Wizards who have the same points but a game in hand.
